• How to naturally ward off a cold this winter

The chances are you are likely to come down with a cold this winter. According to the national health stats, the average person will catch 2 -3 colds per year and account for over 25 million days off work as a result. That’s a lot of catching up to do!

So what can we be doing to ward off those pesky bugs? It is notoriously difficult to keep the bugs at bay but there are a few things you should be doing to help keep your immune system strong to help fight them off.

    1.Wash your hands

This is the single most effective way of preventing colds. Colds are mainly transferred and picked up by spluttering sufferers touching objects such as a handle or cup of tea and the virus is easily spread from person to person. Regular washing of hands will significantly reduce the chances of you picking up someone else’s germs.

During exercise, immune cells circulate through your body more quickly, aiding them to attack any viruses that have entered your body. However you also have to keep in mind that intense exercise can have the opposite effect and can leave your immune system vulnerable for up to 72 hours. Remember to recover properly after training by consuming protein and by replenishing the water, potassium & sugar your body has lost during exercise (Mello Watermelon juice is great for this).

    3.Eat Well

Our best defense from getting sick and staying healthy in general is to take care of our bodies by eating well and supporting our immune system with a diet rich in vegetables, whole grains and fruit. This provides your immune system with the vitamin and antioxidant rich foods it needs to protect against colds.

Melon is a colourful antioxidant packed fruit that contains high levels of Vitamin A & C to support a healthy and strong immune system. Mello Melon Juices are a quick and easy way to give your body the boost of antioxidants it needs to stay healthy this winter- even better, it is quick and easy so you can just grab it on the go! J

    4.Keep hydrated

Dehydration inhibits the immune system’s functioning so it is important to keep hydrated by consuming lots of water throughout the day. Drinking water may also help wash cold and flu viruses from your throat to your stomach where they cannot survive.

If you find yourself getting weary of drinking straight water you can eat water rich foods such as celery or watermelon. Or for a quick hit on the go, just grab a bottle of Mello watermelon juice for its high water content and antioxidants- a double immune boosting hit!
